We decided to make cookies for our neighbor down the street today. Charlie had fun mixing, eating lots of chocolate chips and learning the word recipe. Since we've been phasing out plastics and single use items, we no longer have paper plates, cling wrap, plastic baggies, or really anything that you usually use to package treats. So we improvised...by reusing a 1/2 gallon carton from the recycle bin to make a cookie box that we could deliver without worrying about getting any dishes back.
1. Open the carton top and wash out the carton with soap and water. Then dry the carton.
2. Cut the top section off of the carton.
3. Cut down the corner seams about two thirds of the way down.
4. In one panel, cut a two inch vertical slit in the middle of the panel. Above the slit cut a horizontal 'handle' out, approximately 3 inches by 1 inch.
5. On the panel directly opposite, snip about an inch from the top on either side to make two small tabs.
6. On one of the other panels, cut about an inch and a half off the top.
7. Now you can put your cookies or whatever else you need to package up into the carton.
8. Fold the tall uncut panel down over the treats and fold the slightly shorter panel down on top of the other panel.
9. Fold the top of the panel with the tabs in half and fit through the slit on the opposite panel.
10. Unfold the tabs so that everything stays closed and secure.
We had a great time delivering the cookies and Charlie had fun carrying the little box around by the handle. This little box could also be decorated and used to package a gift or to carry a small lunch or snack. Got any other ideas? Let us know!
